In celebration of National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion of Easthampton High School (EHS) is hosting its 2nd Annual Awareness Event in collaboration with various high school student groups offering awareness activities for students from September 15-October 15, 2019. The theme this year is: “Stand Tall Mi Gente,” the inaugural program will honor the rich legacy and cultural impact of Hispanics/Latinos in Easthampton, and the U.S.
The kick-off day will begin September 26th with an EHS after school community conversation on the topic of Bias Defiance centering around a powerfully moving video series: “Hosted by John Quinones, What Would You Do?”
The concluding Heritage Month event will take place in Café Commons at EHS with a high-energy lunch entertainment program of spiritual Afro-Brazilian drumming by IESHA and a Spanish Folk Music performance by the duo Grupo Islanda.
Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month grew out of National Hispanic Heritage Week, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law in 1968. In 1987, Representative Esteban Torres of California pushed for a month-long commemoration. Torres argued that supporters of his bill “want the American people to learn of our heritage.
What makes September 15th so significant is the anniversary of independence for the following Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day, is October 12, falling within this 30-day period.
